The Coast Path - Our Story
We have loved walking the coast path ever since our very first holiday together 30 years ago! Working in busy corporate jobs we were seeking an escape from the day to day hustle and bustle. Stepping on to the path, experiencing the breath-taking views and enjoying the feeling of wilderness made us feel wild and free and we kept coming back until we eventually chose to move to Devon.
We love our peaceful haven in the Devon countryside and hope that you will too. We have walked all of the Jurassic coast path sections and often return to our favourite spots.
The logistics can sometimes be tricky and planning walks can be time-consuming, so we hope that we can make things as easy as possible for you by sharing our own experience and local tricks and tips to help you along the way.

Common Concerns and Frequently Asked Questions
Please also read our disclaimer and terms and conditions.
“When can I book for?”
We have availability during the months of September and October 2025 and April and May 2026. This is a great time to visit when the weather is not too hot, but also usually less wet and windy than the winter months and there are no summer holiday crowds.
“Where is the accommodation?”
The accommodation is at Axe Valley View, in the small hamlet of Tytherleigh on the borders of Devon, Somerset and Dorset - a great location for exploring the south-west. We are just a short ten minute walk from the Tytherleigh Arms - an award-winning pub with delicious food. The neighbouring village of Chardstock and the Tytherleigh Farm Shop are also a short walk away. The town of Axminster is just ten minutes drive away, where there are local shops and amenities and a railway station with rail link to Exeter and London.
“Will the drive ruin the vibe?”
Not at all. The sections we suggest are no more than a 35 minute drive and the scenic drive can be part of the adventure and part of the decompression— leading you to and from the sea views to the peaceful Axe valley.
“What facilities are there at the accommodation?”
You will have a double bedroom with en-suite shower room and a separate living/dining room with cooking facilities. There is a comfortable sofa and fold away table and chairs for dining inside. A smart TV is provided and there is free WiFi.
For cooking there is a combination oven/microwave, a fridge, a portable two-ring induction hob, a kettle, toaster and sink. Nice and easy to cook your own dinner or warm something up after a day’s walking and plenty of space to make up some sandwiches or fill a flask to get prepared for a day’s walk.
The bedroom has a comfortable double bed, bedside tables and a small set of drawers/shelves to store clothes and any personal items and hooks with hangers for coats and clothes. The cabin has heating in the bedroom and living area and a heated towel rail in the bathroom, making it nice and warm and cosy even on a cold winter’s day. There is also a clothes airer, in case you need to dry off any clothes after getting caught in the rain.
Outside you will have your own patio and deck area with table and chairs for dining outside, all with beautiful views across the Axe Valley. The accommodation is within our large garden, but is separate from the house with complete privacy. There is plenty of room to park on the drive and from there you will walk along a gravel path to your outdoor seating area, deck and entrance through a sliding door and into your accommodation.
There is a covered space out on the deck for muddy boots and hooks to hang coats.
“I’m not confident with map reading.”
The coast path is easy to find and easy to follow, with sign-posts along the way and we will help by providing you with maps along with guidance on your chosen section to walk and how to follow any diversions. We can provide help and support if you need a hand and can lend you a compass, but before you set off on your chosen walk, you do need to feel confident that you can follow the map and the guidance provided.
“What if I’m not a hardcore hiker?”
We can help you to choose shorter or less challenging sections to walk and provide suggestions for rest stops, cafés and pubs along the route. There is no need to walk every day if you don’t want to. Just take your time, do it at your own pace and remember to relax and enjoy the views as you go. Remember that sections of the coast path can include steep climbs and descents, uneven ground and infrequent facilities so if you are not confident with you abilities then it is best to avoid these sections.
“Can I come solo?”
Absolutely. Many guests walk alone to reflect and return feeling grounded and inspired. The accommodation is safe and private and we will be on hand if you need anything.
“Do I need to be super fit?”
There is no need to be super fit, but you do need to take responsibility for choosing walks that are suitable for your level of fitness and ability. Some sections include steep climbs and descents, uneven ground and infrequent facilities, but others are shorter, with more gradual hills and plenty of places to rest and take a break. If unsure, it is better to underestimate what can be done in a day, so that you can enjoy the walk at a comfortable pace, knowing that you will get to the end and feel a lovely sense of achievement, without any worry.
“I’d rather walk from my doorstep”
Although you will be staying a short drive away from the coast path, you will be close enough to the coast to enjoy the walks, but far enough away to escape the busy coastal towns and rest and relax in a peaceful haven so you wake up feeling refreshed the next day. As you will stay in the same place each night, there is no need to pack up all your luggage each day and move on to a new place or organise luggage transfers, just come home to the cabin to rest and relax.
“Could I just plan it myself?”
Yes, it’s possible to plan the walks for yourself and some people love to do all the planning but if you want to give it a try for the first time, or love walking but are short of time to plan, then some extra information and local knowledge can save you a lot of time ahead of your trip and help you out along the way and can also help if you are unsure of the level of difficulty for each walk.
“What if the weather ruins it?”
It’s hard to predict the English weather and we can’t guarantee sunshine and no rain, but we have suggested times of the year when the weather is most likely to be suitable, during the months of September and October and April and May. This is a great time to visit when the weather is not too hot but also usually less wet and windy than the winter months and there are no summer holiday crowds. If you get caught in the rain, we have a clothes airer for use to dry out any wet clothes and there are outdoor hooks to hang anything that is dripping wet! If it’s so bad that you don’t want to walk, then you could relax and enjoy the view or visit local towns, National Trust Properties or other nearby local attractions. Safety is the most important thing and the weather can often be more extreme on the coast. Avoid walking on the coast path if there are any weather warnings in place and remember that weather conditions on the coast can change unexpectedly.
“What do I need to bring?”
A sturdy pair of comfortable walking boots and clothing suitable for all weathers are essential. Lots of layers work well, especially if the forecast is unpredictable. A day pack, a water bottle and maybe a flask and room in the pack for some lunch if you fancy a picnic and extra clothing. A pocket first aid kit and whistle for emergencies and then some comfortable clothes to change into to relax in the evening.
“What if I get lost?”
The South West Coast Path is usually easy to follow using maps and following the signposts along the way and we will provide you with maps and information to help to avoid this and can lend you a compass and help with how to use these, but if the worst comes to the worst and you just need a bit of help, then give us a call and we will do our best to help you. If you are worried before you set off then you can let us know which section you are walking before you go so that we know where you are in case of an emergency and we will provide you with emergency information in case you need it. If you need to cut your walk shorter that you anticipated, then we can help with information about public transport and reputable local taxi companies and can call a taxi for you, if needed. There are also mapping apps that can be used to help you find your way and we will provide you with information about these.
